Chapter 14

Darius

I’m pissed that I’m not with my mate right now. She needs me, and I need her, but I have to trust Damien and Felix. I know they’re capable, and they won’t let anything happen to her. That doesn’t stop me from wishing I was there giving her a shoulder to lean on. Unfortunately, I have to stick to the plan. It’s the only chance we have at claiming our fated mate.

I’m still keeping tabs on the investigation and her safety. I don’t want anything left to chance. The police questioned Andre, and he has an alibi. He was asleep, and his fiancé confirmed it. That doesn’t mean he’s not lying, but there’s no proof at this point. They still regard him as a person of interest, but there’s not much they can do. I’m having him watched now, and if he tries anything, I’ll kill him with my bare hands.

He’s a member of a small pack that no one knows much about. They could be responsible.

I take the threat on Audrey’s salon mirror seriously, so until it’s clear that this was some sort of hoax or some bored teenagers, I have people looking into the break-in.

I hope that Audrey comes around, but until then I have to take matters into my hands. I sit outside Alpha Donovan’s house. As a sign of respect, I’m here to see him about his daughter, Nicole. She still lives with her father and is protected by his pack. She’s groomed to be an alpha’s mate, and her father treats her like a precious jewel. I’m not looking forward to this, but I have to do what I have to do.

I knock on the door to Donovan’s spacious home. An omega maid answers the door. “Good afternoon. I’m Darius Huntington, here to see Alpha Donovan.”

“I know who you are, alpha. Please come in.” She gives me a warm smile, and I scent her lust. As I walk past her, there’s a glint in her eye. “Can I offer you something to drink, alpha?”

“No, thank you.”

“If there’s anything I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Alpha Donovan will be right with you. Follow me, please.” She leads me to the drawing room and offers me a seat.

“Thank you,” I say as I sit.

“If I may speak freely, you’re kinder than I expected.”

“What did you expect?”

“I’m not sure, an abrasive, no-nonsense disposition.”

“I am all those things, but my father taught me to be a gentleman as well as an alpha.”

“I’m grateful that he did.”

“You may go now.” Alpha Donovan dismisses the woman as he enters the room.

The maid bows and scurries away.

“Damn omegas. Can’t keep their mouths or their legs closed. Am I right?” He laughs.

“I don’t know about that. She was just being polite.” I stand to greet Donovan, and I offer him a bottle of vintage wine.

“You let me know if she gets out of line.”

I nod. “Alpha Donovan, thank you for seeing me. Please accept this gift.”

“That’s very nice, Alpha Darius.
